Briefly - Important dates. June 20, 1917- the first troopers began training at Camp Newayo in Manlius, on the lands of the 1st NY Nat’l Guard Cavalry. 1921 New York State School for Police established at the YMCA in Troy. Previously training was done at Troop barracks. Note “School for Police”, as people from other departments were trained. 1924 -Basic Police School for troopers extended from four to six weeks. 1938- Enlistment system abolished. Troopers given permanent appointments. A high school diploma and a driver’s license became new qualifications. 1942 -WWII U.S. Army Tactical Warfare School for internal defense. Training related to guerilla warfare, chemical warfare and sabotage techniques. 1945 -110 troopers returned from military duty to be reinstated in division given two week refresher course and first training since 1941. 1946 - First revision of the New York State Troopers Manual since 1930. 1949 - State police school offered two week refresher course for all members who had not attended the basic school in the last five years. 1956 - 20 troopers take part in diving school. 1958 -Basic school training extended from six to eight weeks. 1961 -New York State School for Police closed with the graduation of the 66th Session, was renamed New York State Police Academy and moved from Troy YMCA to Troop G barracks at Loudonville, and extended from eight to 12 weeks. 1962 - basic school courses were conducted at the State University at Albany and Oneonta, the N.Y. State fairgrounds, Syracuse University and State Police barracks at Sidney in Troop C and Loudonville in Troop G. 780 troopers were graduated. 1964 - Academy recruit training expanded from 12 to 16 weeks. 1970 - May 26. Official opening of new State Police Academy complex, State Campus, Albany, constructed at a cost of $5.2 million. 1991- Trooper applicants now required to have at least 60 credit hours of college education.* September 30, 1993 - Dedication of the Gray Rider.
